Death Note does a good job of working biblical stories into narrative. Whether it be characters who's faith rivals that of biblical figures, the symbolism in the imagery, or the overarching story in general it appears western/ christian religion had some impact on the creation of Death Note.

The first quote from are protagonist is him is a religious reading of unknown origin.

"Follow the teachings of God and receive his blessings. And so it shall be that the seas will again become bountiful, and the raging storms will subside" This does a good job at depicting how Light with come to view his religion. He will be the god passing judgement and only through accepting his view of justice will people be safe and be rewarded for their faith.

Other Bible stories in the Death Note series include:

One of the main characters in the series is Soichiro Yagami, Lights father, he has the most unshakable faith in his son believing against all evidence that Light is innocent and willing to go to extreme lengths to prove it.

One particular scene is reminiscent of that of the biblical figure Abraham.

Where God ordered that Abraham sacrifice his own son Soichiro had a similar role in the story.

To prove his son was not a serial killer Soichiro agreed to a plan set up by L where he would take Light and Misa to a location. Soichiro would tell them they had been determined to be Kira, and in order to stop the killings he was going to kill him.

The point of this was for Soichiro to prove his son's innocence, or prove L's theory. Either Light would kill his own father (or Misa would kill him) proving that they were in fact Kira, as L suspected, or he would live indicating they were innocent. In agreeing to this plan Soichiro placed his faith in his son knowing he was risking both their lives.

Countless times throughout the series Soichiro proves that he will always place his faith in his son the same way that Abraham placed his faith in God.

                           Watch from 9:20 to 12:13

This displays Soichiro Yagami's tremendous faith in his son

There is one scene thats christian influence can not be overlooked as mere coincidence. At one point in the anime series, L knows that he has been defieted and he would no doubt be killed by Light very soon. However his actions are not reminiscence of this fact instead of getting angry or lashing out at Light instead he washes Lights feet and gives him a foot rub extremely reminiscent to Jesus washing the feet of Judas before his death.

While L is not resurrected the same way Jesus was he does return in a manor of speaking. Five years after his death it is reviled that he had two successor that will cary on his mission to take down Kira.

The last prominent biblical story that is represented in Death note is the story of Lucifer.

In the bible a snake (Lucifer) tells Eve that eating the forbidden fruit would not kill her stating "you surely shall not die. For God knows that in the day you eat from it, your eyes will be open and you will be like God. Knowing good and evil." This is very similar to Light obtaining the death note. When he first uses the death note he feels guilty, however afterworld he believes that he is able to determine who is good and evil and proclaimed himself a God.

Like Lucifer, Light was a good son "the best and brightest" of Japans youth, but he became corrupted and inevitably fell from grace. The website grace to you outlines the fall of Satan and how he chose to resent God rather than worship him and try to usurp Gods place. This is very similar to the way Light conducted himself.

In the end Death Note, and especially Light, is a story of the corruption and how no human could handle the power of a God.
